Turbo Metal Bog on Steel

Hi, thanks for your time a few minutes ago. I have attached photos for you of the steel structure in question and the paint I used on it, and the product I want to use over the paint. Effectively I want to go around the steel and fill in/touch up larger imperfections in the steel with filler, prior to sanding and putting on the final finish coats of white paint.

The paint on the steel is the carboline high build rust barrier( as shown on the tin) an oil based product. I thought it would be no problem to fill the small manufacturing blemishes with the turbo metal bog, then sand and paint. However, on the website in one place it says not to use over paint and in another not to use over water based paint. If you can pass this on to the right person for feedback and guidance it will be appreciated.

Anyone is welcome to call me to discuss to discuss this if need be…

Thanks for the enquiry. Metal bog contains styrene monomer as a cross linking agent that is consumed in the polymerisation reaction. Styrene monomer is a liquid and a very strong solvent for solvent-sensitive binders like those in water-based paints. It will also dissolve fresh oil-based and other solvent-based paints.

But these paints cure by oxidation upon drying and become non-soluble after a suitable time that varies with the type of paint. Your Carboline paint will be ok to Metal Bog over after a few days in this weather – longer in winter. Good question and well spotted on the directions. Due to the size of can and warnings required there is no room for this full explanation on the can.

Hi, thank you for your quick response… Much appreciated. Always like to do my research… Big job and stakes here if I get it wrong… So I suppose I couldn’t put over the top of a water based enamel paint (the top coat) for small touch ups? Looks like I will leave a few days to dry before getting back into it..
